Airbox & Carbs

Air box & Carburetor Specifications

One of the key features of a Sport is without doubt the twin 40 Weber carburetors. The Sport uses a specially designed pair of Weber 40 DCOE carbs. These are also shared with the Talbot Samba Rallye, a rival of the Nova in rallying in the mid 80’s.

The Sport uses a pair which are numbered 40 DCOE 143 & 40 DCOE 144, made with a vacuum system which was joined to the cars distributor, which gave it better road manners around town but also the performance when and where it mattered. The carbs were mounted on a Irmscher inlet manifold and then secured in place using a pair of stabilising rods, which have often gone missing over the years.

In road specifications Sport’s were far quicker than the standard 1.3 SR model but there was always room for improvement, as there is with any hot hatch. There are a couple of easy ways to tease a bit more power from your original Sport & Weber 40’s – you can find out more about this in the Service and Parts Page where you can find details on the upgrade options for jetting your Webbers.

Carburetor Jetting

The standard jetting options are as follows:

Idle Jet – 59 F 21

Main Jet – 100

Air – 160

Pump – 40

Emulsion Tube – F47

Choke -28mm/28mm

Air Box

We do not know an awful lot on the Air box, but we do know that the main purpose was to reduce intake noise and increase the torque of the engine. We are aware that it shared a casting with an item made by, or perhaps for SORG Motorsport in Germany. It may have been a joint venture, but we suspect due to the small run of Sports that Irmscher UK may have approached SORG for to use their design, as this would have reduced development costs and kept the overall costs of the “Sport Pack” down.
